submitted by Missy

1 C. flour
2 t. baking powder
2 T. cocoa
1/2 t. salt
3/4 C. granulated sugar
1/2 C. milk
1 t. vanilla
2 T. shortening (melted)

Sift dry ingredients. Add milk, vanilla and shortening. Mix until smooth. Add 1/2 C. nut meants (if desired). Pour into greased 8-inch square cake pan.

3/4 C. brown sugar
1/4 C. dry cocoa

Mix and sprinkle over batter.

Pour 1-3/4 C. hot water over entire batter. Bake in moderate oven (350°) 40-45 minutes.

Recipe can be doubled -- use 9x13 pan.

Whipped cream or Cool Whip can be used when served. (or ice cream). We like it plain most of the time.

Grandma Sackett's handwritten note: I have made this for 47 years. It forms its own sauce under the cake.

I am following in Grandma Sackett's footsteps. This is my favorite dessert and I will make it until the day I die.

I use oil instead of the shortening.
